She commands a fan base in the tens of millions, has been one of the world’s most famous women over the past two years, and maintains a reputation free from scandal or controversy. Yet, even Taylor Swift isn’t immune to being booed by a crowd.

During last night’s Super Bowl LIX, featuring the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, the pop icon appeared to be minding her own business when she suddenly became the target of jeers. Swift, attending the game at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans to support her boyfriend, Chiefs’ player Travis Kelce, seemed to mouth, “What is going on?” to her friend and fellow artist Ice Spice.

The unexpected booing erupted when the camera zoomed in on Swift in her suite, projecting her image onto the stadium’s big screen before a crowd of 75,000.

Unsurprisingly, Swift was caught off guard by the reaction, leaving many to wonder: why did it happen?

As expected in today’s digital age, social media quickly became a forum for debate. Within moments of the footage surfacing online, fans on X began speculating about the cause.

“Eagles fans are booing her. She’s originally from the Philly area but is obviously rooting for Travis and the Chiefs,” one user pointed out.

Another added, “The boos are from Eagles fans, aka the opposing team’s supporters. This is normal.”

A third simply stated, “It’s the Eagles fans.”

Still, not everyone understood the reaction, with many taking to X to express their confusion.

“Why did she get booed? I thought she was America’s sweetheart?” one user questioned.

Another remarked, “Booing Taylor Swift as if she’s actually playing against your team, when she’s just sitting there minding her own business, is such loser behavior.”

“What I don’t get is why people booed Taylor Swift,” a third commented. “She was literally just sitting there supporting Travis Kelce and watching the game. It’s not like they were about to recreate the Gabriella-Troy scene from High School Musical 3.”

Meanwhile, one person who received no such negative reaction was Donald Trump, who made history as the first sitting U.S. president to attend a Super Bowl.

When the camera panned to the president—who was sworn into office just three weeks ago—cheers erupted throughout the stadium. “I thought it would be good for the country to have the president at the game,” Trump stated in an interview.

As for the game itself, the Eagles claimed victory over the Chiefs with a 40-22 win, preventing Kansas City from repeating last year’s championship success.
